Staphylococcus aureus is the bacterium behind folliculitis, boils, and MRSA. It doesn't die easily. Especially not on cotton.
The fact
Lab studies find viable Staph aureus on cotton fabric up to 8 weeks after inoculation. Washing at 60°C kills it. Washing at 30°C mostly doesn't.
What to do about it
If you don't wash your bath towel at 60°C every day (nobody does), a single-use towel skips the problem entirely.
